Today I would like to introduce you the awesome Janine from California, a young expat who is running her own business in Barcelona. She is a Health Coach. What does that mean?

As you know I am so curious to know about  expats in Barcelona who started a new page in their lives here, giving birth to cool ideas, so let’s ask Janine a few questions about her business in Barcelona!

1. Tell us about you, Janine!

I am a Certified Health Coach and love every moment of it! I got my Certification while in Barcelona from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I am excited about nutrition and helping people reach their health goals and it just so happens that there is a large demand for Health Coaching in Barcelona. The relaxed lifestyle is leaving people a bit off track from their health goals whether it be losing weight, finding a successful career, being in a healthy relationship or getting fit. It is easy to get sidetracked here and dive into the indulgence of Beautiful Barcelona. I help people reconnect with themselves in order to find the balance that they are looking for to be happy and healthy.

2. How was your start?

I started about 6 months ago and it was a slow process of learning and building my practice. Issues are normal but I wouldn´t consider them issues as much as challenges on how to problem solve. There is always a way if you are determined enough. Since I do not rely on my personal coaching as my only source of income right now I am free to coach 1-on-1 or give group talks without the stress of paying the bills. I am lucky enough to also be a health coach for YogaBodyNaturals.com. This opens me up to be more focused on my clients and less so about finances.

3. How is it going now?

My personal and professional business is growing just at the right pace for me. I am juggling many things in my life so I don´t mind building my practice slowly as it is fun and I just want to enjoy the ride. The 10 year goal is to be able to coach from home via internet so that I can start a longer term permaculture project. As a Health Coach I love to practice what I preach so I want to get back to the earth and grow my own food.

Find your passion and BREATHE it. Life is too short to stay in dead-end-jobs that drain your happiness and purpose. If you are starting or ending your day unhappy, something is terribly wrong. But even living your passion is hard work. You have to decide if you prefer to continue with what you are doing now or if you really truly want something enough that you are willing to sacrifice for it and work for it long term.

Piel Bronceada en Barcelona: Todo lo que Necesitas Saber

¡Date un bronceado rápido y natural!

Una piel bronceada como uno sabe, contribuye en favorecer el aspecto físico y en definitiva, te hace sentir mejor. En Barcelona, ciudad famosa para sus playas, hay varios centros de estético que te permitirán adquirir un bronceado natural antes de que llegue el verano y hacer que te sientas bien al momento de ponerte el traje de baño!

Después de unas investigaciones sobre los diferentes precios y servicios que cada uno propone, he decidido centrarme en el que según yo, ofrece la mejor relación cualidad-precio: Solmanía

Ofrece la mejor tecnología con un compromiso de total seguridad, ya que todas sus maquinas cumplen tanto con la Normativa Europea como con la Normativa Española.

Existen dos maneras de obtener una piel bronceada en Solmanía, Barcelona :

1) En máquinas de rayos UVA

El tiempo pasado en máquinas depende de lo que quiere cada persona. Al principio, suelen aconsejarte unos 8 minutos en la maquina más débil llamada “Rápida” para que tu piel se acostumbre a los rayos UVA. Es mejor empezar poco a poco de manera gradual y no exponerse a dosis de sol mayores de las recomendadas (nota que es posible broncear solo de la cara si lo único que quieres es tener un tono más bonito). Después de unas sesiones, ya podrás pedir la “intensiva” que es una máquina con rayos más potente en la cual el tiempo mínimo es 10 minutos y luego la “Diturbo”, la más potente del centro que te asegurará resultados espectaculares y una piel bronceada natural.

Observación: Si nunca has hecho sesiones de UVA y que tienes en mente la escena traumatizante de la película “Final Destination” (¡como yo!), en la que una chica queda bloqueada en la máquina, ¡relax! , en la vida real no puede pasar. Ninguna máquina puede cerrase completamente, siempre hay una parte que permanece abierta durante la sesión.

En cuanto a la comodidad, cada cabina está equipada con aire condicionado, ventilación facial y corporal regulable para asegurarte una comodidad máxima. En más, Solmanía propone opciones adicionales según la cabina que escoges: aroma terapia, agua fresca, salida Mp3, bronceador de cuello y hombros y sistema de refuerzo en cara y en escote.

Punto positivo : La asistenta en la tienda que puede ayudarte y aconsejarte en caso de problemas, o si fuera grave llamar a su médico personal. Cuidado: los rayos UVA pueden acarrear problemas para algunas personas con piel sensible, o fotosensibles.

2) Con el spray bronceado Golden Bronze

Es la tecnología que está de moda y que te pone morena en unos cuantos segundos

(¡ útil para una fiesta, una boda o cualquier otro día especial !)

Con este spray obtendrás una piel bronceada natural desde tu primera sesión y podrás controlar la intensidad de bronceado que prefieras. Sin embargo, la duración es limitada ya que permanece una semana. Para unos óptimos resultados es importante exfoliar la piel antes de cada sesión.
El precio de una sesión es de aproximadamente 20 euros.
Sin embargo, para no gastar 20 euros cada siete días, existen otras opciones para mantener una piel bronceada todo el año: los últimos tratamientos autobronceadores lanzados al mercado ofrecen la mejor alternativa. Los laboratorios encuentran fórmulas cada vez más efectivas y naturales para responder a estas necesidades y proteger la piel de las agresiones externas.

Composiciones de los autobronceadores

Todos los autobronceadores tienen en su composición Dihidroxiacetona, más conocida por DHA, que se utiliza en cosmética desde hace más de un cuarto de siglo. La DHA es una molécula muy grande, a la que  le es imposible penetrar en las capas profundas de la piel, lo que garantiza su inocuidad porque actúa únicamente en la superficie. Colorea las capas más superficiales de la piel y reacciona con la propia proteína de la piel, la queratina. Como la piel está continuamente renovándose, por el proceso de exfoliación natural, el color va desapareciendo.

Consejos para Tener una Piel Radiante!

• Aplicarse cosmética durante la noche
• Beber un mínimo de 2 litros de agua al día
• Tener una diete rica en fruta y verdura
• Una dieta adecuada te permite lograr y mantener un bronceado bonito: hay alimentos ricos en betacaroteno que potencian la creación de melanina (el perejil, la zanahoria, tomate, melocotón, melón…). La vitamina C mejora la formación de colágeno para mantener una piel tersa y joven (naranja, kivi, melón, fresas, etc). Los alimentos ricos en selenio y vitamina E (aceite de oliva o de soja, frutos secos) tienen capacidad antioxidante. Y si te has pasado con el sol, come salmón, caballa, sardinas o atún, ricos en ácidos grasos. Recuerda que una dieta adecuada permite intensificar el bronceado.
• Hacer deporte
• Elegir jabones con el Ph neutro, así como colonias y desodorantes con un menor grado de alcohol.
• Procurar que el agua de la ducha no esté demasiado caliente
• Intentar dormir 8 horas (al menos) cada noche

Hospital Barcelona: Que Vas a Hacer?!

Hospital Barcelona: Barcelona es una ciudad fantástica con un clima perfecto, lo menos que esperas es estar enfermo! Sin embargo, eso pasa cuando menos lo esperas. Cuáles son los números útiles en Barcelona?  los hospitales públicos y privados? Cuál procedimiento hay que seguir si eres extranjero y que papeles llevar? Muchas preguntas que puedes hacerte  y a las cuales vamos a intentar de contestar.

Antes que todo, antes de planificar un viaje al extranjero (si eres europeo) es importante  :

Solicitar la Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea

Tiene que ser solicitada como mínimo 2 semanas antes de marcharse. Pídela a tu organismo de Seguridad Social  en tu país de origen. Si no recibes la tarjeta antes de irte (porque la solicitaste muy tarde) puedes pedir una atestación provisional de substitución válida durante 3 meses. Si estás al extranjero y que la olvidaste o que la perdiste, digigete al organismo de Seguridad Social español, el llamado CATSALUT en Barcelone que también podrá darte una atestación provisional válida de 3 meses. La TSE es individual, nominativa y gratuita. Permite un acceso de forma gratuita a los suministradores de curados en el extranjero, en las mismas condiciones que los residentes. Estas disposiciones pueden aplicarse si eres residente en:

• un Pais de la ‘Unión Europa
• o en Noruega, Islandia, Liechtenstein y Suiza

Advertencia: Para  aprovechar las ventajas de la TSE, consulta médicos liberales públicos o ve a hospitales públicos en Barcelona.

EN EL HOSPITAL

En los hospitales públicos Barcelona, es probable que esperes un tiempo antes de que un médico o una enfermera se ocupe de ti. Al llegar es necesario presentar  tus documentos (carnet de identidad + TSE)  a una secretaria que te dará en cambio una “pulsera” con todas tus informaciones (nombre, fecha de nacimiento) así como una hoja donde todo estará resumido. Esta hoja la tendrás que llevar a una segunda secretaria y finalmente, tendrás que explicar cuales son tus síntomas en frente de una tercera secretaria!  Después de estos tramites, finalmente una enfermera o un medico cuidara de ti.  Sé Paciente !

EN LA FARMACIA

En Barcelona, hay farmacias en cada esquina de las calles. Los  farmacéuticos pueden dar los primeros auxilios, examinarte, hacer vendajes y dar medicamentos entonces no vaciles en ir a verlos si lo necesitas, es más rápido. Si necesitas consultar un medico, te indicaran cuales son los hospitales públicos en barcelona más cerca.
Consejo: Si vas a la farmacia con prescripción del medico, pide una factura para mandar a tu organismo de Seguridad Social y aprovechar de un reembolso.

Parking gratuito Barcelona: Vienes a pasar unos días en Barcelona y te llevas el coche? Aquí como en todas las demás ciudades grandes no es nada fácil aparcar, hasta puede ser una misión imposible ! Con este blog intentaré informarte sobre los mejores parking gratuitos Barcelona.

Para empezar, es bueno saber que durante los fines de semana puedes aparcar gratis en Barcelona, a lo largo de las carreteras. Sólo averigua que este el panel “Prohibido aparcar Laborables de dilluns a divendres 8-20h”

Parking La Maquinista

El centro comercial La Maquinista posee un parking subterráneo con 4.800 plazas gratuitas, todas ubicadas en las 2 plantas subterráneas del Centro Comercial, ¡gratuito y sin límite de tiempo! Lo único es que cierra por la noche. Pero, también hay un parking exterior abierto 24/24h y totalmente gratuito donde puedes dejar tu coche.

Parking Ikea

Muy pocos suelen pensar en los parkings de los almacenes, sin embargo puede ser una alternativa a los aparcamientos pagadores en Barcelona.

Avenida Diagonal

Otra solución, es aparcar su coche gratuito en un barrio de la Avenida Diagonal. Esta avenida es grande pero al final de esta, en el barrio “Pedralbes” (barrio burgués de Barcelona), hay pequenas calles donde es posible dejar su coche en seguridad y de forma gratuita (calle Muntaner, Villaroel o Borell).

Parc Ciutadella

Detrás del parque de la Ciutadela, en la calle Ramón Turro es posible aparcar su coche gratuitamente, igual si subes hasta la Rambla Poblenou.

Zona Universitaria

Si llegas a Barcelona por la noche y que tienes suerte, puedes encontrar en la Zona Universitaria algunas plazas libres donde aparcar tu coche sin gastar un euro.

Montjuic

Cerca de la Fundación Miro, en Montjuic, hay muchas plazas de aparcamiento gratis.

Calle Icaria

A 30 minutos caminando de la Rambla y a 5 mn en metro (Vila Olimpica L4, Urquinaona L1) en la calle Icaria puedes encontrar zonas de aparcamiento gratuitas en Barcelona.

Parking Viajeros

Este no es gratuito pero ofrece precios más baratos que en los demás aparcamientos de Barcelona. El coche se aparca en un parking subterráneo vigilado. Además el staff habla inglés, francés, portugués y español (práctico para los turistas).

En cuanto a los los parkings públicos y pagadores de Barcelona, están administrados por la compañía BSM. En su página internet puedes encontrar una mapa de la ciudad en la cual todos los parkings están localizados. Los precios son bastantes caros (2,89€/hora 37,45€/dia) pero algunos ofrecen abonos interesantes.

Si te multan en Barcelona
¡ no pagues la multa de tráfico !

El Ayuntamiento sigue incumpliendo la normativa de las señales de tráfico:
señalezar en Catalán Y en Castellano

Cualquier persona que haya sido sancionado con multas de aparcamiento puede recurrir por vía administrativa al Consistorio y exigir la devolución de la sanción. En efecto, las señales de tráfico en Barcelona y en prácticamente toda Cataluña siguen incumpliendo con la normativa legal vigente, que establece que deben estar en los dos idiomas oficiales de la Comunidad. Actualmente, solo están en catalán. ¡Pero el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona prefiere no cobrar las multas de tráfico a señalizar en Castellano!

Secretos de Barcelona: Shhhhhh, No se lo digas a nadie!

Secretos de Barcelona: Si buscas el significado de la palabra « insólito » en el diccionario, encontrarás: “que sorprende por su lado inhabitual”. Cuando se visita Barcelona, es toda la ciudad que sorprende por su lado inhabitual. Barcelona está lleno de lugares, secretos, insólitos y sorprendentes. Aquí te damos una guía de los lugares mas secretos de Barcelona.

Secreto 1°: Las vías secretas de Barcelona

¿Tienen ganas de originalidad, de hacer algo raro? Quizás no les han planteado conocer la ciudad por debajo de las calles y de las aceras llenas de peatones. Estas vias subterráneos son unos de los mejores secretos de Barcelona ¡Que vengan  a visitar los subterráneos de Barcelona! durante la Guerra Civil Española más de 1400 refugios antiaéreos fueron construidos para protegerse de los bombardeos durante el franquismo.  Cuando la aviación se acercaba a la ciudad, se apagaban todas las luces, sonaban las alarmas y la gente debía correr para salvarse. Al principio se usaron las estaciones de metro, pero pronto se quedaron pequeñas y hubo que excavar abajo.  Hoy en día, dos subterráneos pueden visitarse.

El refugio de la plaza del Diamante (Gracia)

Este refugio descubierto en 1992, fue construido a 13 metros con una longitud de 250 m. Se estima a más de 200 personas la capacidad de este refugio. El refugio 307 (Poble Sec)

Situado en el centro de la ciudad en la Guerra Civil. Este refugio poseía fregaderos, unas salas para los niños así como una enfermería. Poble Sec, entre el Paseo de Montjuic y la calle Nou de la Rambla. Esta formado por tuneles con unos 200 metros de galerías excavadas durante la Precios: 3€ (gratuito para menores de 7 años) C/ Nou de la Rambla, 1

 

 

Secretos 2°: el original Parc Pueblo Nuevo

Otro secreto de barcelona, es el parque de sombra y sol, imaginado y creado por el famoso arquitecto Jean Nouvel, se encuentra a lo largo de la Avenida Diagonal, al número 130 en el barrio del Poblenou.

Se puede visitar en cualquier temporada del año ya que Jean Nouvel basósu creación en el hecho que siempre se busca  el sol en invierno y la sombra en verano. Así el parque está completamente abierto en invierno. En la primavera, los árboles comienzan a llenarse de hojas y a hacer un poco de sombra y en el verano, solo la sombra permite protegerse del calor. La luminosidad de este parque es increíble.

 

 

 

 

Considerado como el nuevo pulmón de la ciudad, fueron planteado:

• 1 000 árbolesos:
• 5 000 arbustos
• 35 palmeras
• 5 000 cactus

Secreta 3°: El extraño Laberinto de Horta

Si visitan a Barcelona, el Laberinto de Horta es uno de los parques más antiguos y secretos de la ciudad, ya que es desconocido para los turistas. Está ubicado lejos del centro de la ciudad y por eso los turistas no suelen visitarlo, pero créenme, no estarán decepcionados.

El parque tiene una historia larga. Ubicado en la provincia Atbau de Barcelona, su creación es la obra de un aristócrata Catalán que, a finales del siglo XVIII decidió convertir esta antigua propiedad familiar en un parque. Bagutti, arquitecto italian  y Delvalet un jardinero francés fueron encargados de realizarlo.

El parque está dividido en dos jardines: el jardín neoclásico, el más popular con el laberinto y la estatua de Eros dios del amor en su centro. Otras estatuas de dios griegos adornan el jardín, al subir unas escaleras llegaran en el punto mas alta del jardín con la estatua de Dionisos ¿Se atreverán a entrar en el laberinto y a buscar la salida? ¡no es tan fácil!

 

El segundo jardín tiene un estilo romántico. Esta en la área mas aislada del parque, probablemente el mejor lugar par los enamorados o simplemente los que desean tranquilidad. También hay una caída de agua y un canal romántico.

El Laberinto de Horta es un parque muy romantique, ya que muy calma et relajante. ¡Hasta olvidaríamos que estamos en Barcelona!

Secretos 4°:

La Ilusionista Panadería Escriba

Ubicada en Rambla de les Flors, 83, la panaderia Escriba es un establecimiento modernista donde se puede beber un té o tomar un desayuno. El slogan de esta sorprendente panaderia es:

“No sólo hacemos pasteles, creamos ilusiones”

Encontraran en el escaparate anillos de caramelo de todos los colores, también ofrecen pasteles para bodas originales,  frescos que se comen. Para ver todas sus obras :  Panaderia escriba oficial

 

Secreto 5: el escondido Camino

del Ave Maria

 

Una experiencia Religiosa antes de entrar a la basílica de Montserrat, justo en el lado izquierdo. El lugar secreto es el denominado Camino del Ave María y transcurre estrecho entre la roca desnuda y la pared lateral de la basílica. Un lugar curioso y insólito cargado de pequeñas velas de todos los colores que hacen que el lugar ¡parezca mágico!

In summary, we’ll have at least 13 non-working days according to the calendar 2013. If you ARE lucky enough you can have 17 days, that would include the bridges!

Conclusion, for sure you’ll have enough holidays in Barcelona to sleep, travel and eat!

The Raval neighborhood of Barcelona has the esteemed notoriety of being the city’s seedy go to place for night life escapades of sex and drugs. During the last two centuries Raval has been the famed location for several mystery and thriller books. This close quartered location by the sea is home to many of Barcelona’s immigrants and working class citizens. For this reason Raval has been given the distinguished name of Barri Xine, meaning Chinatown. This name came from the location’s vastly diverse immigrant population. Today Raval is one of the most densely populated areas in Barcelona, primarily composing of Pakistani, Indonesian, Indian, and Eastern European immigrants.

El Barrio Raval first began as an area next to the ports outside of Barcelona’s city walls. The word Raval comes from Arabic, meaning “suburbs”. During the Middle Ages this is exactly what Raval was. El Raval is one of four “suburbs” making up the larger part of the Ciutat de Vella neighborhood. Raval was originally a mesh of gardens, small markets, churches, hospitals, and  even a leper colony. Raval was home to what the city itself did not want.  These poor settlements would later be themselves gated off and separated from the residents of the city during the 14th Century.

When the Industrial Revolution finally hit Barcelona it was in Raval that the textile factories were built. The textile industry became a dominant sector between 1770 and 1840. During this amazing transition in manufacturing and production other industries such as brick production, slaughterhouses and leather manufacturing were also located in El Raval. As a result of the increase in industrialization, the first migration wave from within the other districts of Catalonia settled into Raval, and changed Raval from an industrial area into a residential zone. To house these new working class many of Raval’s once open fields and orchards were mowed down and turned into sprawling concrete facades for the working class to call home.  Because of the over population and lack of proper hygiene Raval became a haven of disease and dirt. With disease such as malaria, cholera, small pox, shingles, and even the bubonic plague spreading through the over crowded streets of Raval the life span of the average resident was only in the 30’s. Such mass outbreaks lasted through the early 1900’s.

Ever since the onslaught of industrialization Raval became a popular haven for crime and prostitution. Due to the shadows coming from Raval’s housing complexes along with over crowding the area became rife with drugs and prostitution. To this day Raval is famed for drugs, bars, and cabarets. Due it it’s proximity to the sea ports many cheap taverns and nightly entertainment establishments popped up, along with a highly lucrative drug trade.  The urban transformation of Raval lasted well in the 1980’s and it continued to push tourism and middle class citizens away.

During the 1990’s localized planning initiatives were created to help revive the neighborhood. The localized planning project was completed in 2000 and has introduced tourism through cleaner streets and new tourist businesses. Today Raval is host to bars, restaurants, and small stores alike. The narrow streets are often filled with tourists and local shoppers alike. While the evenings still contain shady people from drug dealers to prostitutes, it is a far cry from the early days in Raval’s history. Just as every other barrio in Barcelona, Raval’s distinct culture, people, architecture, and design bring to the city a unique and vibrant atmosphere that cannot be copied.

Truthfully there aren’t a whole lot of Barcelona Android apps, but as smartphone penetration continues to skyrocket we’re sure there will be more coming and soon. Of the Barcelona apps available on Android, most of them are pretty useless (don’t work properly, provide stale content, etc…) but there are some great ones that will help you get the most out of this vibrant city. 1. Barcelona City Guide (Trip Advisor)

This is one of the best Barcelona City Guide Apps for Android.  Trip Adviser is a great website that has info about hotels, restaurants, bars and so on, all over the world.  People can login and leave reviews for everyone to see.  This idea has been put into an app for many large cities across the world, and the Barcelona App is great.  The App gives you access to a vast library of information and reviews on the go, you can even sign in and leave your own reviews.

The app is easy to use and has an interactive map with all the best attractions marked out.  Its easy to find what you want and find some reviews, either by searching through a category such as restaurants or by typing in the name of a place you want to know more about.  One great feature of the app is that it has free self-guided tours of all the best attractions in the city.  Another great feature is that it still works offline.  Once you do the initial update all the information is saved on your phone so when you’re out and about in the city you won’t have to deal with large data roaming bills.

2. Barcelona Travel Guide Triposo

This is another great interactive Barcelona travel app that works offline.  It has a good off line map that I would say is a little better than the trip advisor app.  This is because the attractions have picture pins so you know what type of attraction it is.  This app is great for reading about restaurants, bars, hotels and so on, although you wont be able to read reviews like on trip advisor.  Over all this is a great Barcelona Android App that is easy to use, and is definitely worth a download.

3. Urban Step – Barcelona

Urban step in a Barcelona transport app for Android that lets you know all you need to catch a bus in Barcelona and when to catch it.  It is an interactive bus schedule that lets you know when the next bus is due and where the bus stops in Barcelona are.  All you need to do is look at the map, find a bus stop near you and then you can find out when the next bus is.

4. Vicing

Vicing is a great free Barcelona App that lets you know where the nearest bicing station is and how many bikes or free slots are available.  Its very easy to use and very useful if you use bicing to get around Barcelona.  So next time you go to your nearest bicing station and there are no bikes left, vicing can tell you where you can find a station with plenty of bikes.

5. TMB Virtual

This is a great interactive Barcelona transport app that helps you get around the city using public transport.  It seems a little difficult to use at first and you will have to change the language to English, but once you get to grips with it, it can be very useful.  If you want to go somewhere all you need to do is input your location and destination and the app will tell you how to get there.

The most impressive thing about this app is the Augmented reality mode.  The app uses your phones camera to show where bus stops or metro stations are In relation to where you are.  So as you point your phone in a certain direction you will see labels on the screen showing you the location of the stations, giving the impression the labels are hovering around you in real life.  It is very cool.

6. FC Barcelona News

This is a Barcelona App for all you football fans out there.  It gives you easily accessible news stories and information about all things La Liga and FC Barcelona, and it is all in English.  There is also a social side to the app where you can see twitter feeds and take part in polls about FC Barcelona.

Barcelona’s Valentines Day with A Twist of Culture and Storytelling

Barcelona lovers hit the streets and buy your novio or novia a book or rose as today is Catalonia’s most cherished day; Sant Jordi Day. Sant Jordi or Saint George is the patron saint of Catalonia along with a dozen other countries around the world. It is accepted that the chivalrous knight died April 23^rd, 303 AD. Many other countries tie the day of Saint George in with Easter Celebrations but here in Barcelona and Catalonia the day deserves it’s own recognition and celebration.

The streets across Barcelona will be radiating with the beautiful color and smells from roses along with the colorful designs and displays of books as sellers show their wares for all to enjoy. Flower and book stands will be draped with Catalonia’s red and white striped flag. Roses will be died in these colors, while other roses will be died red and blue in recognition of Barcelona’s famous football club. It is the tradition here in Barcelona for men to buy their lovers a flower and women to buy a book for their men. As time has gone by it is no longer gender qualified as men can buy women a book and women can buy their novios a flower if they choose to. Just don’t forget to bring your love one of these gifts.

Today is recognized with several different names. Saint George Day, Sant Jordi Day, the Day of Roses, and the Day of the Book. Today alone Barcelona will sell over 400,000 books and over a million roses. More books will be sold today then the rest of the year combined.

April 23 has been the Day of Roses since medieval times. The famed Saint George was once a knight in the Roman empire. The famous Catalonian tale speaks of George traveling through the Catalan town of Montblanc. The small town of Montblanc was plagued by a dragon who required a daily sacrifice every day of a villager. One day the village lottery had chosen the princess of Montblanc as the sacrifice. Before the beautiful maiden could come to her demise Saint George came to her rescue and slew the dragon, piercing it through the chest with his sword.  Upon the ground in which the dragon’s blood spilled grew a large magnificent rose bush shining bright crimson red. To this day Catalonian’s give their lover a rose to symbolize romance and chivalry.

The Day of the Book began in 1923 when a sales savvy book store dealer in the region combined Sant Jordi Day with books as a means to honor the deaths of two world renowned authors; William Shakespeare and Miguel Cervantes, both who had died on April 23^rd, 1616. The giving of books to a lover has been a part of Catalonian culture ever since. In 1995 UNESCO declared April 23 to be International Book Day.

Spend the day with a loved one and walk around the city. La Rambla and Plaza Catalunya will be especially festive as the concrete pathways will be adorned with flowers and books. Happy Sant Jordi Day to everyone.
