Food markets:
~ The Unavoidable: Sant Joseph Market - La Boqueria
Where: Ciutat Vella
Las Ramblas, 91 08002 Barcelona
When: From Mondays to Saturdays
Opening hours: 8:00 am to 8:30 pm
Features: La Boqueria is the most famous market in Barcelona because of its amazing location in the center of Las Ramblas! It's one of the largest markets in Europe and offers high quality products, fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, sweets, etc. You can even eat tapas here! There is quite a lot of tourist traffic but it's still a great place to visit.
This market is a total mix of everything. As you get deeper into the market, you get wafts of people cooking fresh meats, pastas, and fish for the people on siesta or the tourists who happen to stumble upon the market. The vibrant colours make you want to buy absolutely everything because it all just looks so delicious!
Traces of La Boqueria can be dated back as far as 1217, when local butchers set up stalls selling their meats. Since then, La Boqeria has grown into a Market of not just meats, but also fruits, fish, candies, vegetables, nuts, and much more. If you are thirsty or hungry you can find inexpensive fresh squeezed juices for as low as 1€ and fresh pasta for as low as 3€ ... just be prepared to battle through the crows on the weekends for the privilege!
